Grizzly Way 130722 (Riding it Out)
The rough days continued yesterday, I don’t really have a good explanation, it’s just been a bad couple of weeks. I’ve taken some time lately to evaluate the habits that worked, and the ones that may have been detracting, to try and sort out this whole mess. How much I’m sleeping, how much and when I’m eating, what mobility tools got me the most, and those that don’t pay off so much, and probably hundreds of other questions like this – really trying to hone down to the habits that will bring me closer to my goals. While I don’t have anything revolutionary to share from these efforts, I think they’ve been valuable as a way of coping with the downswing. Mostly it’s helped me avoid making excuses for myself, or worse, beating myself up – as if I was doing it intentionally. It’s going to happen, you can’t ride a wave forever, I’m unloading right now, I’ll get fresh and hit this next cycle with a clean slate.

Unloading always feels like a sigh of relief, especially lately. Though yesterday’s weightlifting volume and weights did not feel like a typical deload. Of the three sets at 85% on the snatch, I hit one. I left one in front, and the next behind. The number of off days I’ve had lately is mildly troubling, but at this point I have to move forward. The clean and jerks went much better, no misses, but I also didn’t squat clean a single rep, I sort of made up my mind that forcing that position is not going to help me improve. On my 2nd to last jerk, something happened to my back leg (left) knee; I don’t know what, but when I set the weight down and walked away it hurt pretty badly. More than anything I’m sick of playing doctor with my knees, my knees are assholes, as good of a day as I might be having, they love to show up and ruin it. That was more or less the story yesterday, under the back squat load they were not happy campers, and were all too eager to let me know about it. The volume of this last cycle, squatting 4 and 5 days a week, has clearly run its course on me. These next 5 days will be paramount, getting healthy again so I can get back under that weight.
