Outlaw Way 121101 (Rest Day Adventures)
Yesterday coach David gave me shit for not taking time off – I have a weird mental block when it comes to rest days – I just don’t like the feeling of doing nothing – it doesn’t suit me. Not to get too deep but I’m convinced it has something to do with pre-athletic Dan who used to sit around hours at a time and enjoy it! I get really guilty when I eat food and don’t workout; I think theres probably a disease or psychological disorder named for it. In any case I tried to do David proud today – I didn’t do shit. Well I had to do something or I’d go crazy, but it didn’t involve exercise.
For starters I slept in, a whole 45 minutes! Then I left work early to have a bro-venture, which is basically a cooler way of saying do errands with another dude in a non-homosexual way. Anndd now you all know my secret – I hate doing errands alone. In any case, I called my friend Ian and we headed to Whole Foods, or as I like to call it, Paleo Disneyland. Here’s the problem when you read recipes all day and then go to Whole Foods, literally everything is something you could use, its a sure fire way to spend more than you intended…and I did. That being said there are a few things I’m really excited about.
- Dark Chocolate with no soy lechtin! They put that shit in all the chocolate, I have no idea what soy lechtin is, or why you need an emulsifier to make chocolate, pretty sure it’s overkill.
- Coconut Butter! So I gave up Nuts for the better part of this month as sort of a lent thing since I can’t or am already doing No-Shave-November and I need something almond buttery to fill the void. I’m not sure how I’ll use it yet, but I heard good things.
- Coconut Aminos – not gonna lie, paleo asian flavors are extremely hard to mimic, I didn’t know there was a replacement to soy sauce, I found a gluten free sriracha and I was pumped, so paleo soy is another step in the right direction here. Hopefully I can find some good flavors to go with it.
- Bone-In Pork Shoulder – this is my first pork shoulder, I know there is a ton of potential in this 5.35 pound package. My plan is to use this as my one month blog-iversary meal; I hope my friends approve of what I come up with, all I know so far is there will be habanero’s invovled, and mybe some ginger and probably some coconut milk…
After whole foods we went on a real adventure. Here’s the thing about Saint Louis, if you stick to the beaten path – you’re gonna have a bad time. Well not a bad time, but its not terribly interesting, it’s a lot of Americana and Anheuser Busch but as soon as you start to explore you’ll find cool place after cool place, but its tough to take that first plunge. My first year or so here I was quite miserable. I’ve since learned how to find things I like and be less afraid about driving randomly into neighborhoods in search of quality butchers. Today I found Baumann’s Fine Meats, about as old-school butcher as you can get without going straight to a farm. It’s been awhile since I’ve made a good batch of bone broth and now that the cold weather is rolling in, I figure it’s about time. So I picked up about 3 pounds of beef femurs.
After a good hour long roast in the oven, they’ve now found their way into my slow cooker and my apartment smells about as delicious as one can smell…making me really hungry. Stay tuned for the final product – my last batch came out a little gross – I’m hoping this one will be the clear lovely broth I dream about.
