Week 1 – The Fight
Hello internet friends! It’s week 1 of this little project and shockingly I have things to talk about. I want to talk a little about change – I used to hate it, in a lot of ways I still do, but I’ve gotten much better at accepting it for what it’s good for, adaptation. I used to fight the smallest change, a meal out of place, a serving of rice, a missed session. There’s still a little voice in the back of my mind that hates it, but there’s a larger part that accepts it, and does what it can to make the most. It’s all a matter of perspective, and lately mine has been improving, admittedly slowly.
So this weekend I took some time to read (actually listen) to one of my favorite books, the Tao of Pooh, mostly because it’s framed as the author having a conversation with Pooh and his 100 acre woods friends. I get a kick out of that. Just talking with Pooh, about Eastern Philosophy and how he embodies that. In any case, there’s some great moments that reflect what I’m going for here.
Sooner or later, we are bound to discover some things about ourselves that we don’t like. But once we see they’re there, we can decide what we want to do with them. Do we want to get rid of them completely, change them into other things, or use them in beneficial ways?…
So quite often, the easiest way to get rid of a Minus is to change it into a Plus. Sometimes you will find that characteristics you try hard to eliminate eventually come back, anyway. But if you do the right things, they will come back in the right ways.
So really what I’m getting at here, is to just embrace things, because it’ll take far more energy to fight it, and maybe not get anywhere, than it would to just accept it and move forward. That’s a good place to start this whole 52 week thing I think. In the spirit of rolling with things, I’m mixing up programing once again. The gym has transitioned away from Invictus, I’m not going to argue one way or another, it happened. So now I’m following BarbellWOD, which has a strong focus on strength and olympic lifts and accessories, they run short cycles based on linear progression. Tried and true, lift heavy and eat and you’ll get better. It pairs nicely with the SkilLWOD stuff which I’ll follow unchanged. Plus Wes Piatt writes conditioning to go with BarbellWOD which I will be following in part. It’s a lot of volume altogether so I’ll have to be smart and prune where I need to. In general I’m excited. I just finished the first day a couple hours ago and I’m embracing it.
So now we’ve got 2-3 different programs depending on how you count things, that I’m trying to follow as faithfully as I can, but with summer classes starting today, we’ll see how much gets done. Obviously I’m going to prioritize the barbellWOD strength work, the HSPU/CTB gymnastics work, and keeping my conditioning on pace. I think that’s doable. I’m still on the RP Diet – still trying to make it work for me, its taking some tweaking especially with the crazy May, but again making the best of it. Lastly, I’ve got some fun stuff coming down the pipes in the next couple weeks. I think I’ve finally got a handle on the Marc Pro Plus, how to use it, what it’s good for, etc, and I’m looking to write that review in the next week or so. I’ve got a bag of the new Xwerks protein on the way to review as well. It should pair nicely with all the supplement reviews I’ve already got going.
Maybe I’m just in a better mood, but things are looking up. Embracing the change and adapting. Getting my pooh on!
